Kazuo Ishiguro, with his writing of Never Let Me Go, has mastered the subtle art of storytelling; giving a lot while saying little. Never Let Me go is a simple dystopian science fiction novel, and we mean simple in all aspects. It is an interesting story that will hold your attention from beginning to end, but the reader is never really able to cultivate a connection with any of the characters let alone a love for any character. The book lacked depth in this area, leaving readers unable to ever feel invested in any given character, although some of the scenarios and exchanges were pretty relatable in nature.
Never Let Me Go did offer some genuine mysteries about life and friendship, and shows us the real futility of life through the characters' lives appearing one way but proving quite another.
Another thing to note is that the book has a dark undertone throughout the duration of the story, hinting that there is no happy ending yet you want to know the details of just what that means. Ishiguro's ability to produce a story alluring enough to continue the read and even clearing up any potential confusior in the end was very impressive, and is more than readers often get in many other cases.
Overall, the writing and story itself were clear and concise, but there definitely seemed to be room for more of a connection with the characters. Upon completing the novel though, and learning and understanding the full story, it's possible there wasn't a place for said emotion, or that it was intentionally
Never Let Me Go was delicate, and left a lot of room for the reader to feel what their personal perspectives allow them to feel. We give the book 3 stars out of 5.
